I knew a little about Iran. Not much, but a little. I knew it had been through many changes, and that most of those changes had been setbacks in regards to personal freedom. Here is a small 1 minute video that gives you a visual insight into some of the changes in style, if you are interested. All right. What I did not know was how and why. And to be honest, it never occurred to me to go deeper. There was a revolution, some religious fanatics took over, and then everyone started knowing a little about Iran. There was a revolution, some religious fanatics took control, and then everyone began to dress as if they were in the stone ages. People in my country choose to wear burkas, so I assumed that most people in Iran thought it was a good thing. Now, my original opinions may seem stupid, but in my defense, I honestly do not understand why someone does something when it comes to religion. So covering from head to toe does not seem more strange than not using a contraceptive method, avoiding certain foods or refusing medical treatment. And do not make me start thinking that My husband is the head of the shit in the house ... What I want to say is that if people want to do those things because of their religious beliefs, why not dress? Hello? Amish, right? But really this story is much more than just clothes. It is about the slow and methodical war waged on freedom of any kind in Iran, and it is told through the eyes of a woman who lived as a child. As it comes from a rich and educated home, you get a different perspective than perhaps you otherwise would. Your parents are actively protesting against the changes, while trying to maintain a sense of normalcy in your home. Growing up in a home like that made a great impression on her, and you can see her behaving and rebelling as she approaches her adolescence. She did not grow up to be calm and docile, so she gets irritated under the rule of her country. My son and I read this at the same time, and he thought it was also an incredibly enlightening story. Actually, he said something like this: Hey, that was very good. I did not know that some of that happened in Iran. Praise the teenager! Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading the second part of this story, because ... That ending! ...Plus
