Opinions of Norse Mythology

I have always liked mythology, folk tales and legends. They are the original fairy tales of humanity and, given the timeless quality of the fairy tales of Gaiman's writing, it seemed to follow that he would be the perfect writer for a book of Norse mythology. He is. In fact, it seems that Gaiman was born to write (or rewrite) myths. Norse mythology is actually one with which I have always been less familiar. I know Greek, Roman and Egyptian well enough, and also a little Indian, but my knowledge of Norse mythology is something I've always liked. I have always liked mythology, folk tales and legends. He is. In fact, it seems that Gaiman was born to write (or rewrite) myths. Norse mythology is actually one with which I have always been less familiar. I know quite well Greek, Roman and Egyptian, and also some Indian, but my knowledge of Norse mythology ends in Odin, Loki, Thor and Thor's hammer. And even then I do not know much about what everyone did. For me, this book was very interesting and informative, as well as a convincing pageturner. Gaiman recreates the Nordic myths in his characteristic style, with a little humor, a lot of complex characters and a great deal of charm. He makes stories feel modern and fresh, but still timeless. You feel that you are reading about millennial gods, but it is very accessible to the reader today. Low Mythology is told in short stories. Some of the chapters are very short, one or two pages, and others are a little longer. I liked how easy it was to get in and out. I could read some of my other books between stories and return to this without any problem. I know that readability should not be a priority, but it's great to find a book that makes your stories as easy and non-demanding as possible. It's fast and full of action, but what shines through most of it is how all these stories relate to important aspects of the real world, as stories about gods tend to do. This is a fascinating portrait of a time and a people who truly believed in Odin and Loki and in their many escapades. It's fun, open your eyes and it's a lot of fun.
